Recent Developments

NTS Acquires Elliott Laboratories - National Technical Systems (NTS), an engineering services provider, has acquired Elliott Laboratories, which focuses on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC); product safety; and wireless regulatory testing. The acquisition makes NTS one of North America's largest design, test, and evaluation services firms, according to the company. NTS has a growth strategy to increase its US capacity and local services in the San Francisco Bay area.

Controversy Builds Over Beef Testing Standards - The controversy over mad cow-tainted US beef continues, as other countries reinstate or continue bans against US meat imports. Critics say that the USDA doesn't inspect enough cows, testing about one in 90 slaughtered, according to the American Society for Quality (ASQ). ASQ reports that a Kansas beef farmer who primarily sells abroad sued the USDA for refusing to grant permission to test his cows; the 2004 right-to-test lawsuit is still outstanding.

Wyle Sells Test Facility to Silicon Turnkey Solutions - Wyle recently announced the sale of its Santa Clara, California, test operations to Silicon Turnkey Solutions (STS), a test and qualification services firm. STS will operate the test facility as a new division called Hi-Rel Microelectronics. The facility serves the aerospace, military, and commercial electronics industries, providing a wide range of tests for integrated circuits.

Competitive Landscape

Demand is driven largely by industry and government spending on R&D to improve the efficiency of operations and develop new products and services. The profitability of individual companies depends on technical expertise and the ability to accurately predict project costs. Large labs have advantages in providing a larger breadth of service through multiple locations; some have strategic partnerships with major corporations. Small labs compete effectively by specializing in particular types of service. The industry is labor-intensive: average revenue per worker is less than $100,000. Testing labs compete with internal labs of major corporations and government entities.
