It's not Cortez revisited, but Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) -- one of Spain's top banks -- is conquering the New World. It operates in about 10 Latin American countries through such subsidiaries as BBVA Bancomer in Mexico; Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, Chile; and BBVA Banco Francés in Argentina. With some 8,000 offices in more than 30 countries, the bank offers retail, corporate, and institutional banking; investment banking; asset management; insurance; and Internet banking. BBVA also operates in other European countries (particularly Portugal) and is expanding in the China and the US, where it owns Compass Bank and acquired the failed Guaranty Financial Group in 2009.
