With some 600 branches worldwide and offices in about 15 other countries (including subsidiary banks in Angola, the Azores, China, France, Spain, and the US), Banco Espírito Santo is one of the largest banks in Portugal and provides retail banking services. The bank also has subsidiaries that are involved in asset management, consumer finance, factoring and leasing, private equity and venture capital, investment banking, and insurance. Banco Espírito Santo's origins date back to 1869, when its namesake José Maria do Espírito Santo e Silva founded Caza de Cambio, a streetside exchange in São Paulo.
