Overview
Baltija Shipbuilding has seen its fortunes rise and fall and rise again with the tide of international business and politics. Founded by the old Soviet Ministry of Shipbuilding in 1952 to build fishing ships, Baltija made barges, trawlers, and ferries, as well as steel floating docks in use in more than a dozen countries from Cuba to Indonesia. After floundering in the post-Soviet era, the company was purchased by Danish shipping giant A.P. Møller - Mærsk in 1997. Renovations followed along with a focus on outfitting ocean-going vessels to handle shipping containers and building the large docks used to secure cruise ships. Baltija also still builds steel ships, tugs, and barges.
