Arcandor Company Description
Its name has changed, but newly-christened Arcandor AG (formerly KARSTADT QUELLE) is still a big retail player at home in Germany and abroad. The group operates about 130 department stores (Karstadt, Hertie, Wertheim, Alsterhaus, and KaDeWe), sports shops, and leading mail-order firm Quelle. Arcandor also owns a majority stake in UK-based Thomas Cook Group PLC, Europe's #2 travel group. Germany's 125-year-old Karstadt department store chain merged in 1999 with mail-order firm Quelle to form KARSTADT QUELLE. Stung by weak consumer spending at home and a global trend away from department stores, the firm skirted bankruptcy before restructuring. The company changed its name to Arcandor in mid-2007.
