AmSurg serves only certain cuts, but it's not a pricey steakhouse -- the company operates specialty ambulatory surgery centers that focus on a narrow range of high-volume, low-risk procedures. Specialties include gastroenterology (colonoscopy and endoscopy), orthopedics (knee scopes and carpal tunnel repair), and ophthalmology (cataracts and laser eye surgery). AmSurg promotes its centers, which are each affiliated with a physicians practice group, to patients and doctors, as well as managed care organizations and employers. AmSurg owns a majority interest in more than 190 outpatient centers in 32 states and the District of Columbia. It also has three centers under development.
