Alaska Railroad Company Description

Alaska Railroad operates freight and passenger trains between the Gulf of Alaska and Fairbanks, traveling through scenic Denali National Park. Cargo carried by the railroad includes chemicals, coal, consumer goods, gravel, oil field and mining supplies, and petroleum products. The company's rail network spans some 465 miles of main line track. The State of Alaska owns Alaska Railroad, which is overseen by a seven-member board appointed by the governor. The company was founded in 1984 to take over the railroad, which was built beginning in 1903, from the US government.
