Overview

Apartment Investment and Management Company (AIMCO) is the REIT with the mostest -- apartment units, that is. The REIT (real estate investment trust) owns or manages about 200,000 apartment units, making it #1 in that category, although that comprises only a small fraction of a very fragmented market. Sam Zell's Equity Residential is the only apartment REIT that surpasses AIMCO's sales. Through subsidiary AIMCO Properties, the company has interests in about 1,180 properties in 46 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. The company's apartment portfolio consists of garden style, mid-rise, and high-rise properties.
