Jul. 24--The nation's lowest-paid workers are getting raises. The minimum wage, which has been $6.15 in North Carolina since the beginning of 2007, climbs to $6.55 today. Even with that 6.5 percent increase, however, a minimum-wage worker still has to work more than 30 minutes to afford a gallon of gas.

Jul. 17--This weekend, Friday through Sunday at beautiful Springfield Lake, for the first time in more than a decade, the American Power Boat Association will hold a national sanctioned race at the lake as part of the Rock the Docks celebration. This means some extra money for Springfield Township and Lakemore as racers from around the country are expected to compete.

Jul. 11--Teddy's Back. Asked about the difference between playing a rib festival and a historic music venue, Geiger dryly said, "Well, at a rib fest, the focus is on the ribs. But this time it's music, and a lot of material other than what he offered on his debut CD, Underage Thinking. Through his Web site, you can hear and download 33 new songs. Like the first CD, the new stuff is appealing.
