    Dec. 2--LOWELL -- Ten workers refused to cross a picket line at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium yesterday, where four insulation installers were protesting the hiring of a non-union company to do work at the venue. The protesters, who belong to Local #6 AFL-CIO, paced in front of the auditorium from 6 a.m. until about noon with large signs slung over their necks.

    Dec. 2--The Port Authority drivers' union plans to vote Sunday on a proposed four-year contract that asks workers to pay more for health care and work longer to retire. The contract between Port Authority and Amalgamated Transit Union Local 85, if approved, would end months of bitter negotiations and prevent the shut down of bus and T service for nearly 250,000 daily riders.
