Recent Developments

Americans Driving Less - Americans drove 22 billion fewer miles from November 2007 through April 2008 than during the same period in 2006-2007, according to USA Today. It was the biggest drop in miles driven since 1979, which industry experts blame on record high gas prices. Auto rental companies are likely to be negatively impacted if driving continues to decline.

Increased Demand for Small Vehicles may be Temporary - Rising demand for small vehicles may be short-lived, according to Edmunds.com. Auto rental companies working to increase the number of small vehicles in their inventory may lose money on their investment if demand for small vehicles declines. Edmunds.com says that the trend toward small vehicles is leveling, and interest in previously declining segments, such as compact crossover SUVs, is rising.

Web-based Tool Includes Fuel Cost in Rental Car Price - Travel search engine Kayak has introduced a Web tool that helps users compare car rental models based on the estimated amount they'll have to pay for gas in addition to the rental price. The Fuel Cost Calculator allows users to enter how many miles they plan to drive on average each day and whether that driving will be primarily city, highway, or both. The daily price of each car rental is then recalculated to include the estimated daily cost of gas. Another tool on the Kayak website allows users to eliminate car models that get below a certain mile-per-gallon rate.

Competitive Landscape

The industry depends highly on the general state of the US economy because most customers are business or vacation/leisure travelers, whose numbers can rapidly fall during an economic slowdown.
