Action For Boston Community Development Company Description

Action For Boston Community Development (ABCD) strives to make helping others as easy as 1-2-3. The not-for-profit serves more than 100,000 low-income people in New England in areas such as advocacy, child care, consumer services, education, health, and housing. The group operates through a decentralized model that utilizes a city-wide network of Area Planning Action Councils, Neighborhood Service Centers, and Head Start and Child Care Centers. It coordinates with more than a dozen programs like SUMMERWORKS (work experience for low-income teens), Foster Grandparents, Urban College of Boston, and another 10 or so government agencies. ABCD started in 1962 as one of several national programs to combat poverty.
