Actavis is Icelandic for generic. Iceland-based Actavis Group is one of the world's largest generic pharmaceuticals producers (but far behind giant Teva Pharmaceuticals). The company has more than 400 drugs in its development pipeline, and has more than 600 products on the market across a variety of therapeutic classes (among them cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and oncology). It also manufactures generic hospital products, including antibiotics, anesthetics, and painkillers. Actavis makes drugs in pill, injectable, suppository, and other forms. Subsidiary Medis distributes its drugs worldwide. Actavis is controlled by chairman Thor Bjorgolfsson through his investment vehicle Novator.
