Recent Developments
Wireless Growing Among Hispanic Teens - The rate of wireless subscriptions among Hispanics 12 to 17 will grow at two to three times the rate of teens overall in the next five years, according to MultiMedia Intelligence. About 2.5 million Hispanic teens have wireless service, or about 16 percent of the overall teen market. According to MultiMedia Intelligence, Hispanic teens tend to use more advanced telephony functions, resulting in a higher average revenue per user.
Survey Highlights Telecommuting Benefits - Companies that allow employees to work from home enjoy increased productivity, greater staff retention, and reduced costs, according to a survey by the Computing Technology Industry Association. Of companies surveyed, 67 percent report that allowing employees to telecommute improves productivity. Nearly 60 percent say that telecommuting programs result in cost-savings from reduced use of office materials and vehicle-related expenses.
Landlines Continue Decline - More than 25 percent of US wireless phone users never pick up a traditional wired phone, finds a recent study by market research firm JD Power and Associates. The trend away from landlines is most pronounced among consumers 18 to 24, about 30 percent of whom have disconnected their landlines. Only 9 percent of those over 65 no longer have landlines.
Competitive Landscape
Demand is driven by technological innovation and by growth in business activity. The profitability of individual companies depends on efficient operations and good marketing. Large companies have big economies of scale in providing a highly automated service to large numbers of customers, and have the financial resources required to build and maintain a large network. Smaller companies can compete effectively only in small markets or by providing specialty services. Because of the large degree of automation, average revenue per employee is a high $300,000.
