Recent Developments

US Parts Makers' Fortunes Improve - US auto parts makers are seeing improvements after several years of bankruptcies, restructuring, and industry consolidation, according to the Wall Street Journal. While US-based car makers like Ford and GM continue to struggle with their North American operations, suppliers are improving by slimming down, focusing on exports to emerging markets, and moving manufacturing operations to low-cost regions. Although individual companies like Visteon and Lear may be doing better, total auto parts exports for the first two months of 2008 fell 2.4 percent compared to a year earlier.

Shipments, Orders for Motor Vehicles, Parts Down - US shipments of motor vehicles and parts declined 10.6 percent in the first three months of 2008 compared to the same period the previous year, and new orders for motor vehicles and parts fell 11.2 percent. Shipments and orders are being hurt by record fuel prices and a sagging US economy. Consumers are choosing either to postpone purchases or select more fuel-efficient models, of which US manufacturers have few models relative to some of their overseas competitors.

Johnson Controls Partners for Improved Hybrid Battery Production - Record fuel prices are driving increased interest in hybrid vehicles. In response, auto battery maker Johnson Controls is collaborating with French high-tech industrial battery firm Saft to develop more efficient electrodes used in lithium-ion hybrid vehicle batteries. The partnership aims to combine Saft's proprietary electrode technology with Johnson Controls' manufacturing and development expertise to reduce the cost of electrode production while lessening its environmental impact.

Competitive Landscape

Demand for auto parts is driven by new car sales, which are strongly affected by interest rates, and by the replacement market. The profitability of a company in the industry depends partly on how difficult it is to manufacture its products and partly on the volume of demand, since many costs are fixed. Small companies can compete successfully with large ones by focusing on a small number of products, or some highly technical ones.
