Recent Developments

Climate Change Solutions Worry Industry - Industry experts worry about how the US government will address climate change. A representative of the American Trucking Associations (ATA) recently addressed Congress to express concerns that legislation designed to head off climate change could negatively impact the trucking industry; specifically, ATA is concerned about cap-and-trade, where credits for carbon dioxide emissions are swapped, which it feels would raise fuel prices. The ATA says that the industry is taking steps to confront climate change issues, and will continue to.

High Diesel Prices Target Trucks - Rising fuel prices are hurting trucking companies in many ways, including theft. Industry experts report thefts of diesel fuel in all parts of the US because of the high prices. In some cases, trucks are damaged, which means that trucking companies, or independent drivers, have to repair them, adding to the loss. Trucking companies are working on solutions.

Border Hauling Gains New Trip - Truckers used to haul freight only one way across the US and Canadian border, but now they're bringing freight back with them as well, a trend directly related to current diesel prices. However, there are some unforeseen problems for truckers, as many aren't used to the paperwork required to bring freight back across the border. Known as e-Manifest, US Customs and Border Protection requires advance electronic notification of all freight coming from Canada into the US.

Competitive Landscape

Demand is driven by consumer spending and manufacturing output. The profitability of individual companies depends on efficient operations. Large companies have advantages in account relationships, bulk fuel purchasing, fleet size, and access to drivers. Small operations can compete effectively by providing quick turnaround, serving a local market, or transporting unusually sized goods. Average annual revenue per employee is $135,000.
