Aéroports de Paris Competition

Recent Developments
Bill Aims to Improve Airport Worker Screening - The House approved a bill that would make it more difficult for terrorists to get airport security jobs. The bill, introduced by the House Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, would require the Department of Homeland Security to study the use of biometric identification systems to verify the identities of airport workers.
US Airways Fires All Skycaps - US Airways says that it'll have to replace all its skycaps with union employees to avoid violating a labor contract. The move stems from a $15 fee US Airways is charging for a single, checked bag. A USAirways labor contract requires that the baggage fees be collected by US Airways customer service agents. The skycaps were provided under contract to USAirways by ground services provider PrimeFlight Aviation Services.
General Aviation Shipments, Billings Mixed - The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) reports mixed results for general aviation (GA) industry billing and shipments in first quarter 2008. GA billings in first quarter increased more than 16 percent compared to a year earlier, but shipments decreased more than 7 percent. Particular softness was noted in piston deliveries; GAMA's CEO says that 67 percent of piston deliveries are in the North American market. A slowing US economy and a corresponding lack of North American demand for piston aircraft could suggest reduced future demand for GA services.
Competitive Landscape
Local and regional air travel, especially business travel, drives demand for aviation services to small and private aircraft. Profitability is based on sales volume, as prices fluctuate only periodically. Small companies can compete effectively in hometown markets. Big companies have more clout in negotiating with suppliers, which allows them better pricing options for their own services.
